Food Safety Modernization Act

What is FSMA?

The “FSMA” is the Food Safety Modernization Act. It is broad sweeping legislation that covers topics ranging from food sources at farms, to finished products. It was signed into law in 2011 and is being implemented in multiple stages over a number of years. Its goal is to create a standard set of current science based food safety regulations to which all food producers must adhere to ensure the safety of our food supply.

This is a brief summary of our understanding of the current state of this legislation.

Why does this matter?

Most importantly under this new legislation:

  • Companies that create samples of liquid or semi liquid foods for R&D are now considered

Food Producers and must register with the FDA.

  • These regulations require that you must be able to prove that samples being produced are safe for consumption.
  • As a Food Producer, you must be prepared for inspections from FDA

What does this mean to our company?

  • Companies need to register with FDA as a food producer, and learn and comply with relevant regulations regarding equipment, process efficacy, material and sample management, and data management.

What if we have an older MicroThermics system, can we still use it?

  • Yes. Implementation of the FSMA is being rolled out from August 31, 2015 to about February 2017.

After this, you may need to update your equipment to comply with the FSMA. We offer a range of options that can be added to older systems, or this may be an important opportunity to consider new equipment.
